Only a few minutes drive from Bolotho is Truro, the county’s only city, and just the right dose of urban life in Cornwall. Recently ranked in the top 20 High Streets in the UK, the city’s heritage as a market town means visitors have plenty of independent shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as a weekly farmer’s market on Lemon Quay. For a spot of local culture we’d recommend checking out what’s on in the newly re-opened Hall for Cornwall and visiting the famous gothic spires of Truro Cathedral.

Set on its own peninsula with stunning views of the Fal Estuary, Trelissick House and Gardens date back to the 1750s and offers visitors more than 30 acres beautiful gardens to explore. Discover the twisting paths that lead you to exotic plants, hidden summer houses, deep woodlands, collections of hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and camellias, and even an art gallery and eclectic second-hand bookshop! The Crofters café is a good spot to enjoy a well-earned Cornish cream tea.

Home to the third largest natural harbour in the world, Falmouth has so many historic sites and attractions to discover. Just under 10 miles away from us at Bolotho, head down to Falmouth and immerse yourself in its maritime history, explore the cobbled streets that lead to local cafes, independent shops, art galleries, rum bars and museums. And make sure to keep your eye out for the town’s busy calendar of events that celebrate Cornish life including waterside Regattas, sea-shanty gigs and the famous Oyster Festival.

Immerse yourself in the three valleys of Glendurgan Garden; a paradise of fun, natural beauty, and exotic plants from around the world. Stumble across giant rhubarb in the jungle-like lower valley, and watch out for the spiky arid plants of the sunny upper slopes. Drop down to the charming hamlet of Durgan where you can spot birds, skim stones and explore ponds thriving with wildlife. Learn the history of the Fox Family who founded this slice of paradise, and head to the onsite shop, plant centre and cafe!

Over 120 years in the making, Trebah Garden is just 12 miles away from us at Bolotho, and boasts 25 acres of sub-tropical plants, natural springs, Koi ponds and two excellent playgrounds. Discover Mediterranean and Southern Hemisphere plants that intertwine with Australian tree ferns, bamboo, and other exotic species. Wind down the garden trails to the private beach on the stunning Helford River, and learn about its pivotal role in the D-Day landings. You can enjoy locally sourced refreshments in their Mediterranean-style terrace cafe, as well as shop for plants and gifts. It’s no wonder that Trebah is rated as one of the best 80 gardens in the world!

Cornish Seal Sanctuary

Based in the picturesque creekside village of Gweek just 14 miles away, the famous Cornish Seal Sanctuary presents a chance for you to meet the seal pups and other animals that are rescued from Cornwall’s coastlines. Spend a few hours getting up close to seals of all kinds, whopping sea lions, penguins and retired farm animals. You may be lucky enough to see one of the young beavers in the new Secret Creek project, part of a wider beaver re-wilding initiative. Learn all about the charity’s rehabilitation programme which saves and strengthens its residents all whilst educating visitors on the impact of plastic pollution on our shores.
